The opportunity

We are looking for a motivated Associate to join our Family Law team. Your day-to-day work will focus primarily on matrimonial and family matters. You will also assist with civil litigation matters from time to time, according to client needs and team workload.

This role offers exposure to a broad range of family matters, direct client contact and opportunities to develop your drafting, advocacy and case-management skills while working closely with experienced colleagues.

We welcome applications from Hong Kong qualified solicitors with 1–5 years’ post-qualification experience and relevant family law experience. Newly qualified solicitors with meaningful exposure to family law during their training contract and a strong interest in developing a family law practice will also be considered.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities will be allocated according to your experience and will include:

  • Advising and assisting clients throughout matrimonial and family proceedings, from initial advice and pre-proceedings negotiations to settlement, contested proceedings and post-divorce applications.
  • Handling divorce and separation matters, financial applications and ancillary relief proceedings, and disputes concerning children’s custody, care and control, and access.
  • Assisting with cross-border family matters, including international relocation, child abduction, and the recognition and enforcement of matrimonial orders, where applicable.
  • Preparing and reviewing pleadings, affidavits, affirmations, financial disclosure, court applications, hearing bundles and correspondence.
  • Attending court hearings, conferences with counsel, mediation and settlement meetings, and undertaking advocacy where appropriate to your experience and rights of audience.
  • Drafting and reviewing pre- and post-nuptial agreements and settlement documentation.
  • Maintaining clear, timely and sensitive communication with clients, including on case progress, next steps and costs.
  • Liaising with counsel, overseas lawyers, experts and other professionals as required.
  • Conducting legal research and assisting with cross-border legal issues in coordination with overseas advisers where appropriate.
  • Managing files, procedural deadlines, disclosure and hearing preparation, with supervision appropriate to your experience.
  • Assisting with civil litigation matters on an occasional basis.
  • Supporting trainees and junior colleagues where appropriate to your experience.

What we are looking for

  • Admission as a Hong Kong solicitor, ideally with 1–5 years’ PQE (newly qualified solicitors with relevant training experience considered).
  • Relevant matrimonial and family law experience, particularly in financial and children matters; cross-border experience an advantage.
  • Sound knowledge of Hong Kong family law, court procedure and practice directions, and working knowledge of civil litigation procedure.
  • Strong research, drafting and analytical skills, with close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; Chinese language skills preferred, but not essential.
  • Good judgment, discretion and empathy in handling sensitive personal and financial matters.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to take increasing responsibility for matters, with appropriate supervision.
  • A genuine interest in building a family law practice.
